2:00 PM, Membership Meeting,

Burns Horticultural Center,

Planting Fields Arboretum,

Oyster Bay, NY

January Speaker – Dr. Linda M. K. Johnson

Dr. Johnson is currently an Assistant Professor at Christopher Newport University in Virginia, holding advanced degrees in biology and environmental science.  Her background also includes extensive formal education in landscape architecture and horticulture.

We first met Dr. Johnson at a Mid-Atlantic Chapter Conference in Virginia Beach where she was the featured speaker on opening night.  Her entertaining presentation drew heavily on her experiences as an educator in the field of horticulture, and all in attendance were enthralled with her fast paced and humorous program.  Make sure to join the fun at our upcoming January Meeting.  You will not be disappointed!

February Speaker:  Werner Brack
Werner is a former NY Chapter President and Treasurer, past District Director, avid rhododendron hybridizer, and tireless contributor to the New York Chapter.

Would all members with last names from K - S kindly bring a dessert to share.

President’s Corner

Can anyone remember a more spectacular Autumn foliage display than we witnessed in November?  Those of you who grow Japanese maples along with rhododendron and azaleas were treated to a special show.  These plants are among the most reliable for Fall color and usually steal the show.

As some of you may know, the Society’s immediate past President, Dr. Leonard Miller, grows and appreciates a wide variety of plants in the Tulsa, OK area.  A good friend of his, Keith Johansen, operates a wholesale nursery, “Metro Maples” in Dallas/Fort Worth.  In speaking with Dr. Miller last week, he was preparing for an excursion to Keith’s nursery – about 7 hours drive each way – for the sole purpose of witnessing many thousands of Japanese maples in full Autumn dress.  We understand that a number of new introductions will be available at the 2008 Convention in Tulsa, with on site provision for shipment to your home.  See the upcoming Winter Journal and/or Website for information about and registration for the Convention – “Rhododendrons in the Wild West!”

Keep warm, watch for lengthening days, and have a Happy, Healthy 2008!  We’re only 90 days away from the earliest “bloomers”.

Annual Brunch will be held on March 16, 2008 at 12:30 p.m. at the Milleridge Inn.
